Property Broker is
the correct terminology for many names used in the business to identify
what we do. Such as, Truck Broker, Freight Broker, Freight Agent,
Transportation Broker or Agent, and many more lesser known descriptions.
Freight
Forwarder is a type of Cargo movement which involves the physical
acceptance of the freight for shipment. It usually involves
warehousing, holding, consolidation, and sometimes reshipping. Usually
these shipments are LTL, less than truckload.
Property Broker
Authority allows a third-party to arrange pick up and delivery of the
Shipper's product by a Carrier without ever having physical control of
the shipment. These shipments are typically TL, Truckload, but can also
be LTL.
It has been
recently estimated that freight transportation cost in the US is well
over the multi billion dollar range annually and rising. The amount of
this freight being moved by third parties is estimated currently at the
20-30% range and growing. More Shippers are using Brokers & Forwarders
each year since it is usually much less expensive for a Shipper to use
an outsource, than to fund and maintain an in-house staff functioning as
a Transportation Department. Employee-related costs are usually the
most expensive part of any business operation. Paying a Broker on a
performance-only basis is the trend of the future with many Shippers.
Those
individuals who like a challenge, are willing to to devote the time
needed to learn, and have the capability to set up an office and market
their services to Shippers are usually very successful in this field.
However, there are many pitfalls to be avoided and many who simply do
not know which way to turn for guidance in sticky situations. As we
mentioned on the Home page, this field is simply not for everyone!
Check again some
of the traits necessary to this type of endeavor: patience,
persistence, persuasive, yet pleasant and positive. It does take time
to establish and develop any new business. You should have the
financial resources available to sustain your self until the revenues
are coming in from your efforts. Or be willing to work as an Agent for
a season and learn first hand until you are sure this is for you and you
have the capital and contacts to branch out on your own.
This is an
excellent business and the Brokers that are successful are making
anywhere from $40,000.00 to $400,000.00 per year. From a small
part-time, home-based business to a larger office with just a few
employees. But, remember, there are more failures than most will tell
you of. Make a self-evaluation based on the traits and information we
have presented, and if you feel that you are one of those who are
determined to make it, call and schedule in to the next available Class
and we will dedicate our resources and experience to getting you off to
the best possible start and direction. Call 1-800-865-1923 Monday -
Friday 8AM-5PM CST. If you decide this is for you, we look forward to
meeting you and helping you.
